Unusual Haunted Places in ScotlandScottish Ghost Stories from Strange Locations
From the top of a mountain to an isolated beach, Scotland has a plethora of ghostly tales. Tourists can explore the country's more unusual haunted places.
With its numerous castles Scotland is a country full of ghost stories, but not all spirits reside in ancient homes. Paranormal activity has been reported in a variety of unusual locations. Ben Macdui – Cairngorm Mountains, Highlands This intimidating mountain is reputed to be haunted by a truly terrifying apparition which scares climbers senseless. In addition to phantom footsteps being reported some have also encountered a massive figure near the summit, known as ‘The Grey Man of Ben Macdui’, causing them to flee. The paranormal activity on the mountain is well documented, with reports dating back to the late nineteenth century. Dalmarnock Road Bridge – Glasgow This rather mundane looking bridge has been the scene of several ghostly sightings. They all concern a young man, apparently committing suicide by jumping off the bridge. Anyone who has tried to stop him has been confronted by the sight of him falling over the edge before vanishing into thin air. RRS Discovery – Discovery Point, Dundee The Royal Reaearch Ship Discovery is a famous old vessel, used by the great Antarctic explorers Robert Scott and Ernest Shackleton. Today it is preserved at its home port of Dundee, but at least one of its former crew appears reluctant to leave. Footsteps have been reported on board the ship and a figure has also been sighted. It is thought that the ship is haunted by either Shackleton or Charles Bonner, an unfortunate crew member who fell to his death from the crow’s nest. Eilean Mor Lighthouse – Outer Hebrides Rather than being a haunted location, the Eilean Mor lighthouse was the scene for one of the most intriguing mysteries in Scottish history. After several days with no light flashing a party was sent to the lighthouse to investigate on Boxing Day, 1900. There was no sign of any of the three keepers, and their rowing boat was missing. The only clue was a logbook, which described a terrifying storm. The weather was so severe that there was mention of one of the keepers crying and praying. Nevertheless the final entry, on 15th December, noted that the storm had passed and the sea was calm. Despite a court enquiry and the testimony of two passing sailors claiming to have seen three men rowing a boat in the storm, no trace of the keepers was ever found. Sandwood Bay – Kinlochbervie Considered to be one of the best unspoilt beaches in the country, Sandwood Bay sits amidst the ruggedly beautiful scenery of north west Scotland. The nearest road is several miles away, with access to the beach by means of a considerable walk. The area lays claim to two ghosts. One is an angry Spanish seaman, left behind by the Armada. The other is the sad figure of an elderly sailor, who has been seen both on the beach and around the ruins of a nearby cottage.
