St Andrews is a town in the north-east of Fife, best known as the home of golf. It is a place where history belnds seamlessly with a modern, thriving student community.

The town of St Andrews is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Scotland. It has a rich history with several remnants of its ancient past still visible. The modern St Andrews is a cosmopolitan place with many nationalities attending the world famous university.

History of St Andrews

St Andrews is named after an apostle who is also the Patron Saint of Scotland. He is commemorated in Scotland on St Andrews Day each year on November 30th. Once an important port for many centuries the town fell into disrepair and it is only since the 1960s that it has experienced rejuvenation. This is mainly down to a large student population and the popularity of the town’s golf courses. St Andrews University is the oldest university in Scotland.

St Andrews Visitor Attractions

Despite its relatively small size, St Andrews has a large selection of activities for visitors. The town’s numerous golf courses are a big attraction, particularly the famous Old Course. The town is also home to the British Golf Museum for those interested in the history of the sport.

For non-golfers there is a Sea Life Centre and East Sands Leisure Centre, with its swimming pools, water flumes and squash courts. Craigtoun Country Park has something to offer all ages. Activities on offer include crazy golf, putting, a miniature railway and a boating lake. Nearby is the RAF base at Leuchars. The base opens its gates to the public each September for an annual airshow which attracts thousands of visitors.

There is plenty of history to explore in St Andrews. Remnants of the cathedral can be seen standing next to the coast, along with the still intact St Rule’s tower, which is open to the public. Nearby are the ruins of St Andrews Castle, jutting out into the North Sea.

At night visitors can experience the dark side of the town on the St Andrews Witches Tour. During university terms the town is a hive of activity in the evening, with a thriving social scene. There are many pubs and small restaurants. Theatre fans are catered for at the Byre Theatre.

Accommodation in St Andrews

St Andrews is home to several exclusive hotels, including the Rutlands Hotel and The Old Course Hotel. For those on a more modest budget there are numerous bed and breakfasts. Accommodation can also be found in the nearby East Neuk of Fife.

Rail, Road and Bus Travel to St Andrews

By car, St Andrews is around one hour’s drive north of Edinburgh. There is a bus station providing links with the rest of Fife and beyond. The nearest train station is at Leuchars.
