Scotland's Moffat House Hotel in the village of Moffat, a short drive from Glasgow and Edinburgh, has a quarter-million pound refit to upgrade from 3-star to 4-star
The Moffat House Hotel in the historic little village of Moffat, which stands between Glasgow and the English border, has had a major £250,000 refurbishment in order to renovate the hotel to a 4-star standard. The owners faced the tricky task of modernising the hotel to meet the needs and expectations of today's travelers, while retaining the historic feel of a house which was built in the middle of the 18th century.

Moffat House dates back to the 1750s when it was built as a smaller replica of Hopetoun House in Edinburgh. Hopetoun House has been called Scotland's finest stately home, and it is certainly one of the best examples of Georgian architecture in the whole of Britain. It was the work of Scottish architects Sir William Bruce and William Adam.
Until its refurbishment, the Moffat House Hotel was rated 3-star by the AA, the RAC and the Scottish Tourist Board, but it's £250,000 refurbishment has been aimed at putting it into the 4-star category. To achieve this, all the pubic rooms have been redecorated and upgraded, as have all the 21 guest bedrooms, which have all been treated to brand new bathrooms. The decor is very much country house style, some having four-poster beds and there are also family rooms and ground floor rooms for guests with mobility difficulties.

Moffat House has won lots of praise for its food, which naturally tries to use the best local Scottish produce. A typical menu might include Solway smoked salmon, fresh sea bass with lemon and sweet potato salad, confit cherry tomato and herb dressing, or shoulder of Lamb with celeriac puree and herb crushed new potatoes. This fine dining is in Hopetoun's Restaurant, although it is also possible to dine more casually in the lounge, while the Adams Bar has a good wine list and a fine selection of over 75 malt whiskies, for those who want to sample some of the true Scottish spirit.

The Moffat House Hotel is in Dumfries, handily placed little more than a mile off Junction 15 on the M74, which runs from Glasgow to Gretna, and near the A701 scenic drive into Edinburgh. It's less than 60 miles into Glasgow, normally less than an hour's drive, while Edinburgh is only 50 miles away but the drive takes nearer 90 minutes because it's on the scenic A road rather than the fast motorway.
