Glasgow's hotel bed total has risen by more than 40 per cent during the last seven years.
There are now 17,102 rooms throughout the Glasgow metropolitan area in which the 2.8 million visitors who flock to the city each year can stay. Glasgow Has 8329 Hotel BedroomsOf these, 8329 are hotel bedrooms. The remainder are located in guesthouses, bed and breakfast establishments and university accommodation. Hotel occupancy in the city marketed as 'Scotland with Style' averaged 73.9 per cent during the period April 2008 to February 2009. This figure was three per cent less than the occupancy rates for the previous 12 months and the drop is being attributed to the global economic downturn. Glasgow's Two Airports Handled 10.5 Million Passengers Last YearGlasgow's two airports recorded passenger traffic of 10.5 milliion between January and December last year. Around 8.1 million passengers passed through Glasgow International which lies seven miles west of the city centre. Almost 2.4 million passengers were handled by Prestwick which lies 30 miles to the south beside the Firth of Clyde. Glasgow Fourth Most Visited UK City and Third Most Visited by Native AmericansStatistics show Glasgow was the fourth most visited UK city by overseas tourists in 2007 putting it ahead of Liverpool, Birmingham and Cardiff. It was the third most visited city in the UK by North Americans and in this sphere was beaten only by London and Edinburgh. Glasgow is a Popular Conference VenueGlasgow is also popular as a conference venue. Its Convention Bureau secured £151 millions in conference sales during the 12 months ending 2008. This represented a three per cent increase over 2006/2007 and equated to 543,000 delegate days. The 'Glasgow Conference Ambassador Programme' accounted for 23 per cent of all conference business secured in 2007/2008. The programme is supported by more than 2000 members drawn from the local medical, scientific, academic and business communities. Glasgow City Marketing Bureau Gave Local Economy a £16.3 Millions BoostEvents secured by the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau benefited the local economy by around £16.3 millions during the period 2007/2008. This represents an increase of £12.1 millions over the previous year. Event attendances rose from 252,160 in 2006/2007 to 435,062 during the year 2007/2008. Glasgow Has Good UK and International Transport LinksGlasgow has good air links with the rest of Europe as well as North America. Among the 30 airlines serving 90 destinations from Glasgow International Airport are BA, bmi, easyJet, Flybe, bmibaby and Air France. Budget airline Ryanair operates a network of European services from Glasgow Prestwick. Aer Arann and Wizz Air also operate flights to the airport. Rail services from southern Scotland and England arrive at Glasgow Central Station while trains from the north of Scotland pull into Glasgow Queen Street. National Express and Scottish Citylink services arrive at Buchanan Street Bus and Coach Station.
