Foodies Visit in August for Chef Masterclasses and Whisky Tastings
The Edinburgh Festival is the largest arts festival in the world, and yet it doesn't actually exist. What we know as the Edinburgh Festival is a collection of different events and festivals all taking place in the Scottish capital at the same time. There's a Book Festival, Television Festival, Comedy Festival, International Festival, the famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival and also one for lovers of good food and drink: Foodies at the Festival.
Taking place over the weekend of August 23 and 24 in 2008, Foodies at the Festival brings to Edinburgh the country's top chefs and the finest food producers from Scotland and beyond.
Chef Cookery Demonstrations
Among the top celebrity chefs who'll be giving cookery demonstrations will be Martin Wishart, Edinburgh's own Michelin-starred chef. Other Scottish chefs who have had Michelin accolades and will be appearing at the Chef's Theatre over the weekend will be Jeff Bland, from the Balmoral Hotels' number one restaurant, and Tony Borthwick of the Plumed Horse. There will also be demonstrations from Malcolm Webster from the Sheraton Grand, Paul Tamburrini from Hotel du Vin in Glasgow and Jacqueline O’Donnell, the award winning chef from The Sisters in Glasgow.
Wine and Whiskey Tastings
For those who like a drink, there will naturally be tutored whisky tastings from distilleries including Glenkinchie, Ian Macleod Distillers and Bruichladdich, all the way from Islay where they know how to make a fine whisky.
There will also be experts on hand to guide you through some wine tastings and real ale tastings, and even a gin tasting session too with Geraldine Coates, the author of Classic Gin and Editor of Gintime.com.
Local Food Producers
Anyone working up an appetite at the demonstrations will be happy to know that there are stalls from some of the finest food and drink producers in Scotland and beyond, all keen for foodies to sample and buy their produce. These range from Stoats Porridge Bars to La Trinity Caribbean foods. There'll be Aberdeen cheeses and yoghurts from the Devenick Dairy, and one of Scotland's best ice cream makers, Mackie's, will be there too. And there'll be a Lovely Bubbly champagne bar, oatcakes from Simpson's of Speyside, Scottish brown trout from the Delfour Hatchery, Mr Lindsay Grieve’s Championship Haggis, and award-winning beef from Well Hung and Tender in the Scottish Borders.
Organic Food Producers
Organic producers are well-represented too, and include Angus Organics, who produce organic beef; organic cheeses and other produce from the Loch Arthur Creamery; Weardale Organic Soups; and even organic vodka from Godminster Vintage.
